Aider on EU-hosted open models
Run Aider, the terminal pair programmer, on EU-hosted open models: two environment variables and the openai/ prefix on the model name. OPENAI_API_BASE and OPENAI_API_KEY, or openai-api-base and openai-api-key in .aider.conf.yml.
Settings from the official documentation, checked on 12 October 2026. Not run end to end by us.

Setup
1.Point Aider at the gateway
Prefix the Frontière AI slug with openai/ so Aider routes it to the OpenAI-compatible base URL. Set the weak model as well: it writes commit messages and summaries.
export OPENAI_API_BASE=https://getfrontiereai.eu/api/v1
export OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-front-...
aider --model openai/glm-5.2 --weak-model openai/qwen3.6-35b2.Give it the right edit format
For a model it does not know, Aider falls back to rewriting whole files, which is slow and costly. Declare diff edits and the context window in two small files next to your project or in your home directory.

24 live models have tool calling measured by a real call through the gateway. Models labeled EU sovereign run at European providers; fast-access models are served through US-controlled infrastructure. Prices are per 100,000 tokens, margin and VAT included.

Good to know
- Aider edits files through text formats parsed from the reply, so tool calling is not required: more models of the catalog qualify.
- The warning "Unknown context window size and costs" is harmless; the metadata file above silences it.
Where your prompts go
Aider calls the API directly from your machine. Its analytics are opt-in and, per its docs, never include code, chats or keys.
On our side, a model labeled EU sovereign runs at a European provider, and the gateway itself runs in Paris on Vercel, a US company — our privacy page says so. Billing keeps the model, the token counts and the amount, never the prompt or the reply.

FAQ
Does Aider work with Frontière AI?
Yes. OPENAI_API_BASE and OPENAI_API_KEY, or openai-api-base and openai-api-key in .aider.conf.yml. The setting comes from Aider's official documentation, checked on 2026-10-12; we have not run it end to end.
Which Frontière AI model should I use with Aider?
One with measured tool calling, preferably labeled EU sovereign: pixtral-12b, mistral-small-3.2-24b, gemma-4-26b and gpt-oss-120b. The 24 candidates are listed on this page with their context window and price.
