Kilo Code on EU-hosted open models
Add Frontière AI as a custom provider in kilo.jsonc and run Kilo Code in VS Code, JetBrains or the CLI on EU-hosted open models. A provider entry in ~/.config/kilo/kilo.jsonc (read by the CLI, VS Code and JetBrains), or Settings → Providers → Custom provider.
Settings from the official documentation, checked on 12 October 2026. Not run end to end by us.

Setup
1.Declare the provider and its models
For a model Kilo does not know, tool_call and the limits default to off and zero: the agent cannot edit files and context tracking stops. Set both explicitly. The {env:…} syntax only resolves in the global file.
// ~/.config/kilo/kilo.jsonc
{
"$schema": "https://app.kilo.ai/config.json",
"model": "frontiere/glm-5.2",
"provider": {
"frontiere": {
"npm": "@ai-sdk/openai-compatible",
"options": {
"baseURL": "https://getfrontiereai.eu/api/v1",
"apiKey": "{env:FRONTIERE_API_KEY}"
},
"models": {
"glm-5.2": {
"name": "GLM 5.2 (Frontière AI)",
"tool_call": true,
"limit": { "context": 256000, "output": 16384 }
}
}
}
}
}Which model to pick
24 live models have tool calling measured by a real call through the gateway. Models labeled EU sovereign run at European providers; fast-access models are served through US-controlled infrastructure. Prices are per 100,000 tokens, margin and VAT included.

Good to know
- Autocomplete is routed through the Kilo Gateway and only offers Kilo's own models: it cannot use Frontière AI.
- Kilo's BYOK page covers a fixed list of providers used through the Kilo platform. Use a custom provider instead.
- Codebase indexing can use Frontière AI embeddings: indexing.provider "openai-compatible" with the same base URL.
Where your prompts go
Custom providers are called from the local client with your key. Kilo's privacy notice says keys stay local and prompts go to the provider you chose. Autocomplete is the exception (Kilo Gateway).
On our side, a model labeled EU sovereign runs at a European provider, and the gateway itself runs in Paris on Vercel, a US company — our privacy page says so. Billing keeps the model, the token counts and the amount, never the prompt or the reply.

FAQ
Does Kilo Code work with Frontière AI?
Yes. A provider entry in ~/.config/kilo/kilo.jsonc (read by the CLI, VS Code and JetBrains), or Settings → Providers → Custom provider. The setting comes from Kilo Code's official documentation, checked on 2026-10-12; we have not run it end to end.
Which Frontière AI model should I use with Kilo Code?
One with measured tool calling, preferably labeled EU sovereign: pixtral-12b, mistral-small-3.2-24b, gemma-4-26b and gpt-oss-120b. The 24 candidates are listed on this page with their context window and price.
Do my prompts stay in Europe with Kilo Code?

On our side, a model labeled EU sovereign runs at a European provider, and the gateway itself runs in Paris on Vercel, a US company — our privacy page says so.
